Discussion

Rockville Musical Theatre (RMT) is celebrating 50 years of entertaining the Rockville community with high quality live performances and engagement.  RMT is proud of its decades-long contribution to the vibrancy of Rockville through its designation as one of the three Resident Community Performing Arts Companies (RESCOs) at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre at Rockville Civic Center Park.  This continuity of contribution to our local arts and cultural community is extremely noteworthy.  Experiencing live theater as part of a larger audience is an important component of creating and nurturing our community’s identity.

In June 1974, RMT was formed by founding members Mike Reed, Kathy Reed, Tom Reed, Barbara Reed, Bob Hunter, Ginny Hunter, Betty Keate, and Cliff Smith.  The founders invested $900 into its first show, Bells are Ringing, performed at Edwin W. Broome Junior High School in Rockville.  Fortunately, the show was successful and made enough money to fund the next production.  RMT has come a long way since that small show in 1974.  Over the years, RMT has built a reputation was one of the region’s leading community theater companies, and currently has thousands of patrons who support its mission.

The Mayor and Council of Rockville congratulate RMT on their 50th anniversary.  They recognize and thank the theater company for their years of dedication to the performing arts and cultural community service in the City of Rockville, Maryland.
