National Service Dog Month, celebrated every September, is a time to show appreciation for our four-legged friends who serve in a significant role in the lives of many people. Service dogs are more than just pets-they are trained to support individuals with medical conditions, disabilities, or mental health challenges. Their purpose is to assist their human partners and make daily life safer and easier. Because of their dedication, it is important to honor these hardworking dogs by dedicating the month of September to them.
For decades, people have faced medical conditions that can interfere with their quality of life, such as blindness, autism, hearing impairments, seizures, and various mental health disorders. Some of these situations require physical assistance. As society has progressed, researchers and advocates have emphasized that these conditions do not have to diminish one’s independence. With the help of a well-trained service dog, individuals can experience greater support, companionship, and protection.
To highlight the importance of these dogs, National Service Dog Month was established in 2008.
The idea for this observance came from actor Dick Van Patten, who was inspired by the profound assistance service dogs provide to people with disabilities. To further support the cause, he launched a fundraising initiative to benefit service dog training schools and became an honorary board member of Guide Dogs of the Desert. His efforts sparked a nationwide movement, and fundraising during National Service Dog Month gradually expanded across the United States.
Why is National Service Dog Month Important?
• It acknowledges the essential role service dogs serve in and raises awareness of the many tasks they perform.
• It reminds people to express gratitude for the support their service animals provide.
• It helps educate the public about the wide range of jobs service dogs are trained to do.
• It encourages donations that support service dog training centers, helping ensure that service dogs are available for those who need them.
Service dogs are also protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
