Discussion
September 11, 2026, will mark 25 years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001-an event that caused profound loss of life and reshaped U.S. national security and public service efforts.
The attacks killed over 3,000 people across New York City, Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C., including civilians, military personnel, police officers, firefighters, and paramedics. Nearly 10,000 more were injured.
In the aftermath, President George W. Bush urged Americans to serve their communities and designated September 11 as Patriot Day, honoring victims and first responders. President Bush also created the USA Freedom Corps in 2002 to expand opportunities for national service and encourage civic responsibility.
In 2009, Congress passed bipartisan legislation establishing September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, encouraging individuals, nonprofits, schools, and businesses to honor the day through multiple acts of service.
