Discussion
Taiwanese-American Heritage Week was established in 1999 by the Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA) to recognize and celebrate the history, contributions, and cultural heritage of Taiwanese-Americans across the United States. In 2012, the observance was formally trademarked by FAPA, further solidifying its national significance and ensuring its continued recognition. In 2026, Taiwanese-American Heritage Week will be commemorated from May 10 through May 17. This proclamation honors the rich traditions and enduring contributions of Taiwanese-Americans, in addition to acknowledging the broader achievements and cultural diversity of Asian-American communities. It also highlights the City of Rockville’s ongoing commitment to fostering its meaningful partnership with Yilan City, Taiwan, since July 17, 2019.
Over the years, this partnership has grown into a vibrant and mutually beneficial exchange grounded in cultural understanding, educational collaboration, and community engagement. Since the establishment of this relationship, Rockville and Yilan City have participated in more than a dozen exchanges, along with a variety of locally hosted events that celebrate Taiwanese culture and provide inclusive opportunities for Rockville residents. Among the most notable of these events are the Taiwan Bubble Tea Festival, recognized as one of the largest celebrations of its kind in the United States, and the Lantern Festival. Both events are highly anticipated annual gatherings that deepen and unify connections and promote cross-cultural appreciation within the City.
In recognition of Taiwanese-American Heritage Week, the City proudly reaffirms its commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and strengthening international partnerships. Through its continued collaboration with Yilan City and its support of Rockville Sister Cities Corporation, the City honors the lasting contributions of Taiwanese-Americans while looking ahead to a future defined by shared experiences and enduring friendship between our communities.
