LGBTQ+ History Month is observed in the United States each October to honor and recognize the contributions that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning Plus (LGBTQ+) individuals have made locally, nationally, and internationally.
The observance began in 1994, when Rodney Wilson, a high school teacher from suburban St. Louis, proposed dedicating a month to teaching and celebrating LGBTQ+ history. With support from fellow educators and community leaders, October was selected as the month of recognition.
The roots of LGBTQ+ history in the United States trace back to transformative events such as the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City and the legacy of Marsha P. Johnson, a prominent figure in the gay rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Since its establishment, LGBTQ+ History Month has been recognized by numerous civil rights organizations, states, municipalities, and school districts, including Montgomery County and the City of Rockville.
October holds particular significance in LGBTQ+ history, aligning with the first and second LGBTQ+ Marches on Washington. The City of Rockville acknowledges the importance of visibility, education, and understanding of LGBTQ+ history and recognizes the positive impact LGBTQ+ inclusive curriculum and resources have on student well-being. Research shows that LGBTQ+ students in Maryland feel safer and more supported when inclusive educational and community programs are in place.
The City of Rockville also recognizes the many contributions of LGBTQ+ activists, organizations, students, and residents who help make Rockville a welcoming and inclusive community. This includes organizations such as the Montgomery County Pride Center, Live in Your Truth, Trans Maryland, Maryland Trans Unity, and Pride Prom, along with others dedicated to fostering acceptance, support, and belonging.
